Esher Family Photographer
I’m an Esher family photographer and Esher Commons provides a wealth of stunning backdrops to capture natural family imagery. Quite a few of my clients regularly spend time together on the Commons but I find they tend to visit the same area.
There is so much to explore, I thought it would be helpful to share some information about the Commons and hope that you get to explore somewhere different next time you head up there with your families.
Have you ever really explored Esher Commons?
Esher Commons is actually made up of five different commons; Esher Common, West End Lane Common, Fairmile Common, Oxshott Common and Arbrook Common.

West End Lane – perfect for families that love den building
A personal favourite of mine, offering lots of den building opportunities in the tall wooded areas. I think it is stunning all year round but there are also seasonal highlights such as Bluebells up on the Ledges. You could also combine a walk with a trip to the pub just along the road on Winterdown Lane or pop into Garsons Farm for some PYO in the spring and summer months. You could also incorporate a post walk pub stop at The Prince of Wales in West End lane.
Oxshott Common – perfect for families with kids that love running around
I grew up going to Oxshott Common, running up and down the BIG sand pit close to the car park. You can while away many hours exploring Oxshott Common or simply pop yourself down while the kids tear up and down the huge slopes!
Arbrook Common – perfect for bird loving families
With a dedicated car park at the bottom of Ardbrook Lane, this common is perfect for bird lovers with such lush woodland. You might get to see: green and greater spotted woodpeckers, goldcrests, jays, nuthatches, warblers as well as birds of prey such as kestrels, sparrowhawks and tawny owls.
Esher Common – Perfect for families that love walking and talking
There are some gorgeous long walks that go you can go on in Esher Common. Through the tall forested areas, into the heather wide open spaces and then onto Black Pond; I just love the variety of Esher Common.
Fairmile Common – Perfect for families with furry friends.
Fairmile Common provides lots of open heathland areas, with gorgeous colours from the purple heather to the yellow’s of the Gorse. There is an added bonus with the The Fairmile https://www.chefandbrewer.com/pubs/surrey/fairmile/ is just down the road and has a big garden where you can head after a gorgeous long summer walk.
